The Gay Hero ProjectThe Gay Hero Project

We are a media organization dedicated to celebrating the lives and stories of contemporary LGBTQ Heroes

WHEN filmmaker Lance Levesque, reminisces upon his time as a young gay man, he remembers how difficult it was to be gay and feel as though he was alone in the world. “We don’t fit into many of the categories that you’re seeing on television all the time,” he says, “I don’t remember any real gay characters… Where are the programs that highlight gay people on television and share their lives and passions?”

Together with artist & educator Kevin Sweet, he founded THE GAY HERO PROJECT — the collective effort of a small group of makers operating on the belief that everyone deserves to have a hero, and that every hero deserves to have their story told. GHP is actively developing initiatives to collect stories from the lgbtq community and produce content to both empower, uplift, and inspire.

We currently have three initiatives in progress. PORTRAITS is a television-formatted documentary series that enters the lives of figures such as famed artists and comics. ON THE STREETS has the GHP team heading to cities around the US to ask you for stories of everyday heroes and the difference they make in our lives. Finally, GHP PRESENTS showcases short docs and creative works about the lgbtq community.

At its core, the Gay Hero Project operates on the belief that everyone deserves to have a hero, and every hero deserves to have their story told.

By producing entertaining and insightful media about contemporary lgbtq heroes, we are working to fill what we believe to be a gap in media representation of the
lgbtq community.
